Last week, the gossip sites were buzzing over recent photos from Victoria’s Secret swimwear launch. The buzz wasn’t over the new line but over an unusually thinner Victoria’s Secret Angel, Candice Swanepoel. The model, who was discovered while shopping in a flea market, was dressed in a black halter bikini top and tiger print bottoms, posing with Angel’s Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio, is being describe by the Daily News as “scary skinny.” However, Swanepoel responded to the backlash quickly saying that she is “healthy and happy.” She blames any recent weight-loss on the fact that she is busy.
In my opinion, it seems a few unflattering angels coupled with some clear recent weight-loss has Swanepoel looking thinner than usual. The main photo that is being featured on sites is unflattering but other photographs from the event clearly show Swanepoel not much smaller from Lima and Ambrosio. Both models are not being criticized for their figures.
However, the model is still smaller than by Victoria’s Secret standard. The company has been known to highlight women’s bodies and curves as sex appeal for their lingerie. Yet, long gone are the days of Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, and Naomi Campbell, who clearly personified the healthy model figure. The company has a new set of Angels that has stirred criticism for accepting thinner and thinner models.
What do you think? Is Swanepoel outrageously too thin? Or is it the company’s new standard of casting thinner and thinner models that’s causing all of the commotion?
